Centenary Year

Visit Of Bowls England 16th May 2010

                                               Centenary Year
Hertford Castle Bowls Club celebrated the end of another successful year with their annual presentation dinner and dance at Mill Green Golf Club.

2010 was the 100th anniversary of the founding of the club. The club's green was originally situated in a garden in Hertingfordbury Road (the garden was Mr.Rose's), it later moved to the Castle Gardens and finally to Pegs Lane in front of Hertford Council Offices.

Many extra matches and other functions were organised to make the year a special one, including a match with Bowls England.  The visiting players came from across the country, many travelling a long way to celebrate Hertford Castle’s 100th anniversary. Both the ladies and the men played matches against Hertford County teams. Hertford Castle men received the Hertford County Presidents Trophy as they were the only club team to beat the Presidents in 2010. Members also enjoyed a visit to Eastbourne, and one to Mundford Bowls Club in Norfolk where old friendships were renewed. There was also a Bowls Break at Hayling Island, a bowling holiday in Cyprus, and a centenary dinner with a cabaret.

Hertford Castle was also successful in outside competitions, winning the Jubilee Cup in the Welwyn Hatfield League. Castles were runners up, and the Knights were 3rd in the first division of the East Herts. Bowls League. Hertford Castle were Runners-up in the Eversley Trophy and the ladies  runners-up in the East Herts. Anniversary Cup.

Most members participate in the club competitions with just over half qualifying to play on Finals Weekend. Some members were very successful winning more than one competition.
