Hertford Castle made an early exit from the East Herts Bowls League Ranson Cup in this most local of local derbies. Hertford held on to win in a nail biting finish to a match that they had led until the penultimate end.

The first four ends were closely contested with Hertford Castle just edging it at 3-2 but a 4 shot count on the 5th end saw Hertford take the lead. They scored again on the next two ends. The Hertford Castle four struck back with an impressive run winning eight of nine ends, including two 4s and a 3, with the other being tied. Hertford Castle led 20-10 after sixteen ends. Hertford closed the gap in the remaining ends and crucially scored a single on the 21st.

Hertford won all five of the first ends to take an early 11 shot lead. They continued to dominate the game, taking four of the next five ends all of which were single shot counts. With their colleagues on the other rink providing the impetus, the Hertford Castle four started to cut back their deficit outscoring Hertford by 5 shots in ends 11 to 15. They dropped a couple of shots on the next two ends but reversed the trend to win the next three and to tie the match score overall. In a last end shoot out, Hertford Castle held what looked to be a winning position before Hertford ran the jack to a position which was too difficult to get to.
